She waited for him at the diner as planned. He’d be here at six o’clock. Evelyn checked her watch, six-fifteen. She shifted on the barstool and smoothed out her full skirt.

Laughter rang out from the entrance. Mary Jane walked in. He was right beside her, laughing too. Evelyn ducked behind the counter. I’m a fool! He didn’t mean any of it. She crept out by the side entrance, unnoticed. Pete said goodbye to Mary Jane and waited at the counter as planned. Six-twenty. He was ten minutes early.
